· A very similar picture emerged in the District Council elections, with the DUP and SF doing well at the expense of the UUP and the smaller parties.
· The SDLP has slumped from having the greatest share of the vote in the 1998 Assembly elections to fourth place in both the general election and the District Council elections.
· The Alliance Party, alone of all the parties, did slightly better in their share of first preference votes (5.1%) than in their share of general election votes (3.6%), which was depressed by their decision not to stand in two seats in order not to detract from the UUP’s votes. However, they lost 13 seats. They continue to hold the balance of power on Belfast City Council.
· Most SF gains were made west of the River Bann. As with the general election results, the political map shows a unionist/nationalist east/west divide.
