· A very similar picture emerged to that painted by the General Election results emerged in the District Council elections, with the DUP and SF doing well at the expense of the UUP and the smaller parties.
· The SDLP has slumped from having the greatest share of the vote in the 1998 Assembly elections to fourth place in both the general election and the District Council elections.
· The Alliance Party did slightly better in their share of first preference votes (5.0%) than in their share of general election votes (3.9%). They continue to hold the balance of power on Belfast City Council.
· The UUP also fared marginally better in their share of first preference votes (18%) than in their share of general election votes (17.7%). Nonetheless, they lost 40 council seats.
· In the Ballinderry ward of Cookstown district council, only six candidates were put forward for six council seats and so they were appointed without a vote.
· Like the General Election, voter turnout for the District Council elections was also down (by 5%).
